But after all, what is that story of Portuguese being a pluricentric language?

In the last three or four years, Portuguese has been heard to be characterized as a 'pluricentric language', in official discourse, in newspapers and even in the context of teaching Portuguese, either as a mother tongue or as a non-native language.
